TRADERS

In the modern age of electronic trading, every person who wants to become a trader needs appropriate tools to collect market data, analyse that data and place orders. A new trader has a difficult choice — there are literally hundreds of trading schools, third-party indicators and trading platforms on the market. This article will focus on MultiCharts, a well-established trading platform, but one which remains relatively unknown to mainstream traders.

Caspar Marney of Marney Capital Ltd

The two indicators that will be described here — the Marney Volume Indicator (MVI) and the Marney Range Indicator (MRI) — are designed to determine the unique volume and range profiles of individual currency markets in real time. They will be illustrated using this data, imported into the MultiCharts analysis platform.

I have used MultiCharts to illustrate and code the examples and Olsen Financial as the data source, as they have one of the longest historical databases available for foreign exchange, together with the number of price updates, as a proxy for volume.

MultiCharts is a great program, particularly if you want to enter the world of auto-trading. MultiCharts is compatible with many data providers. I found it very simple to set this up with the help of the tutorial applicable to my provider. The program’s uncluttered design makes it a pleasure to use.

A key tool for discretionary traders is already implemented in MultiCharts 6 — data playback. It allows the trader to recreate the past exactly as it happened, and to be able to travel forward or backward in time at varying speeds, depending on individual preference. To achieve maximum realism, traders can replay the data bar by bar, or tick by tick, add one, or more, price series in a chart, and users are able to jump several ticks, or bars, forward or backward.

MultiCharts intuitive interface feels slick and minimalist, yet contains every standard feature: customisable windows, a drawing menu, and charting tools. It is accessible to beginners and will be a user-friendly pleasure for experienced users.

Useful features include allowing several symbols to be displayed in a single window, enabling any combination of symbol and timeframe to be viewed simultaneously. Adding studies and signals to a chart is smooth and allows one to set the trading environment — slippage, brokerage costs and so on — vital for accurate back-testing of trading strategies. The ability to write one’s own strategies is vital for experienced traders, and the implementation of EasyLanguage encourages those new to coding with its ease of use.

An efficient optimisation package (with a fast genetic algorithm to complemen tstandard brute-force methods) enables rapid testing of strategies. MultiCharts has an excellent strategy performance viewer and can automatically produce 3D charts, a vital component of serious optimisation.
