Renko bars incorrect after last MC update

Postby Automeq » 22 Oct 2015

After last update (9.1 - 11815) renko bars are not correctly built.

Please see the example attached (ESZ5 futures - 1 minute - 1 point box size).

Those briks marked with the blue arrows could not be side by side. In a normal renko the change of colour only happens when prices closes two briks in the opposite direction of the last brik.

This error is happening in all symbols, time frames and box sizes. You can test with anything. It was a change introduced in this new version (maybe because of the new input field ?).

Some more examples (ignore the horizontal lines).
Real time, ESZ1, 1 minute, box size 1 point, input close

This one is creating a green box out of nothing, without having the previous one displayed (several minutes had passed with close above that level so the previous green box should be already displayed there).

Another example. Several minutes passed with price at that level and no green box. However is creating a red box in the first chart. The following post will show how this ended with something that never happens in a renko box

This is something that never happens. A red brik in the top of all all green briks

And a final one.
See in first chart how the current bar is of 16:01 and price is 2055.50, well below 2058.75 which was last red brick.

Then in the second chart we can see the bar as 16:02 so the 16:01 bar was closed. However no red bricks were built.
The last red brick there is from 15:55. There should be there at least another three red bricks for a while.

Any update from MC on this? I rely on Renko charts a lot so I won't bother upgrading to the latest version if Renko bricks are not correctly built.

Hello Automeq,

Please enable the option "Show phantom bars" in Format->Instrument->Settings tab.

I'm talking about price levels that were indeed traded and should be reflected in a renko with one or more briks.

If I enable phantom bars I will have briks with prices that were not traded.

Before the new version this was OK. Why is now wrong ?

Hello Automeq,

Since MultiCharts 9.1 Beta 1 real-time and historical Renko bars with the resolution more than 1 tick are now built using 4 points(OHLC). As you have noticed a new option has been added to Format->Instrument->Settings tab->Renko->Input->Close or OHLC.
When Close is selected - the Renko bricks are formed between the close prices of the selected resolution.
When OHLC is selected - the Renko bricks are formed between the Open-High-Low-Close price values of the bar of the selected resolution. It is like a bar magnifier for building Renko that provides more detalization on historical data.

If you want to suggest an improvement for the current behavior - please attach screenshots demonstrating how the renko bricks should be formed on a 1 tick chart in your opinion. Alternatively you can roll back to MultiCharts 9.0 to get the previous renko behavior.

Hi Henry,
The print screens I attached are real time, 1 minute, with Close selected so we're talking about a bug and not a feature improvement.

Do you agree that before, in MultiCharts 9.0, the renkos were based on close (although there was not an option to select) ?

Correct, in MultiCharts 9.0 Renko chart type was based on Close data only.

So do you also agree that in MC 9.1 if we chose Input->Close we should get renkos the way they were produced in MC 9.0 ?

I'm enclosing new examples from yesterday made with following specs:

ES DEZ 2015 (ESZ5)
1 minute
Renko 0.025%
Input: Close

As you see there are several mistakes in the chart building. The situations that I'm highlighting simply do not exist in any literature about renkos. Don't take this as insult but they are completely absurd if we follow the rules of building a renko. We can NEVER have briks side by side or have a red brik as a top, for example. It's simple impossible under renko constructions. You will never find a chart with that.

Please note that in previous version renkos were based on close (and OK) and this example is also based on close (which proves that something was messed up in this last release).

Hello Automeq,

Here is how we understand the classical Renko chart:
Resolution: 1 tick, Input: Close, Break on Session - disabled, Show Wick - disabled, Show Phantom bars - enabled.
Changing any of the described options cannot be treated as the classical Renko, changes in the behavior were tailored for specific user requests.
If the above settings do not work for you - please specify the Renko literature you are referring to with the desired logic described and our engineers will be glad to study it and discuss possible improvements.
