Symbol / Settings / Sessions

Postby Kitty13 » 28 May 2018

All -
Are there any guidelines with respect to whether to use:
I. Settings Tab
a) Symbol Dictionary Settings;
b) Exchange & ECN Settings;
c) Custom Settings

II. Sessions Tab
a) Symbol Dictionary Settings;
b) Exchange & ECN Settings;
c) Custom Settings

I found a couple of previous posts but there didn't seem to be any one answer. I use TS data if it matters. It seems that almost all the TS symbols I add use some weird Custom Setting by default. I would have thought the purpose of a symbol root was to correctly specify all the relevant settings. Thank you.

Hello, Kitty13,

You give an example of the dialogue for a Futures (or Custom Futures) category symbol. Symbol Dictionary Settings cannot be selected for other categories. There is also “Use Custom Session Template” option available under “Sessions” tab for all symbol categories.

Attention: Not all data sources provide symbol settings (Edit Symbol -> Settings Tab) and session settings (Sessions Tab). Each time you add the symbol from a data source in MultiCharts you need to make sure that the settings are correct no matter where they are taken from.

TS API returns the session and symbol settings, that’s why after adding a symbol from TS data vendor supplied list you find “Use Custom Settings” on both tabs. The easiest way is to use these settings if you don’t need any specific symbol settings.

– It is true. Root settings from Symbol Dictionary allow to change settings for several symbols with the same symbol root at once (available only for Futures and Custom Futures).
Also using Exchange & ECN’s Settings or Custom Session Template features allows to change settings for several symbols easily if the same Exchange & ECN’s or Custom Session Template is selected for them:

Also, it is possible to edit multiple symbols using Multiple Symbols Editing dialogue. In order to call it please hold Ctrl key, select the required symbols in the list, right click on one of them and select Edit Symbol.

We take care of your convenience and provide several ways to solve this task, that’s why there are no general recommendations. Please find more information about symbol settings in our wiki section:

Thank you for your considered reply, Svetlana. It's still a little confusing in that there are so many options, as opposed to just having the data coming in correctly after a couple of steps. But so it is.
