Barchart Expired Futures Contracts

Postby vmodus » 01 Feb 2022

I have been trying to find a good vendor for historical futures contracts and am working through a trial with Barchart. I also use IB, however they only have two years of contract data available and I need more.

My issue I have is that I do not see the 'Include Expired Contracts' when I search for contracts to add, as I try to build a custom futures symbol. I see that with the IB contracts, as shown here:

Here is what I see when doing the same using the Barchart data source:

Any thoughts on this?

Hello vmodus,

Barchart does not support symbol lookup for expired futures contacts.
You will need to add them manually according to the instruction here.

Hello Tammy,

Thank you for the quick and accurate reply. The trick is knowing the symbol names, which sometimes vary from data vendor to vendor. I was able to a add historical symbol and load on a chart.

For anyone else who has this issue, you need a list of available symbol names from Barchart. Go to the barchart.com website > Commodity Info > Historical Prices. You can then find your instrument and get a list of their symbols. This is a little cumbersome (no fault on MultiCharts), but once you do it, it should be in the database. From there, you can build your continuous contracts.

Thanks again Tammy, problem solved! :D
