testing with IB Demo account

Postby brucev » 10 Aug 2010

Hi
I am running the IB demo user TWS, found here: http://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/pa ... p_demo.php and it works fine. I have enabled the API tab, and can see the symbol I want to test with EUR.USD being updated on the TWS.
However, I can't seem to define it into QuoteManager.
I have tried quering it in via add symbol, interactive brokers, but aren't getting anywhere. When I added it manually EUR.USD at IDEALPRO, it took it OK, but no data is returned. The log shows the message 'No security definition has been found for the request"
Can someone tell me the correct process to follow?
Cheers,
Bruce

OK, does that mean that as new data is received, it isn't passed through to multicharts to display?
I wasn't expecting historical data, but I thought I would see data that was being sent.

Bruce

yes, MultiCharts can display the streaming data.

set the following:
File > Preferences...
Data Server Mode

uncheck Download missing historical data

ps. I have never tried EUR.USD at IDEALPRO
I have only tried stocks and futures.
if you can see the quote on the Order Management panel,
you should be able to chart it.

Hi Bruce,

I am not sure I understand correctly.

I am using the demo IB account, and the EUR.USD with IDEALPRO and
I don't have any problem.

I can request the symbol without any trouble, I have real time data and historical data.

When you install MC 6 for the first time, you have to add the symbol from the Interactive Broker. From, the "CASH" TAB , in the quote manager

It work fine. normally you should be able to find the symbol,

enter EUR, select idealpro, USD.

In the previous version MC5.0 not the MC 6.0, you had to create an exchange IDEALPRO, only IDEAL existed. Otherwise you couldn't add the symbol

But if it is a fresh installation MC 6.0 without previous installation, it should have the IDEALPRO exchange. (you can check if you have it in the exchange list in the quote manager)

On my side I have historical and real time data.

As your Demo Account is a copy of your real account , make sure that you have IDEALPRO in your real account, otherwise in your demo account you won't have IDEALPRO.

I hope this will help....

what you described is the papertrading account, which is the exact duplicate of your live account.

the demo system is different from the papertrading account.

Hi,

I was just writing a reply that it still didn't work. I went through the process 1 last time, and now the data is plotting fine. I am not sure what I have done differently to previous attempts, but... its working!

Thanks for everyones comments and help.

Cheers,
Bruce
