Events Log

Postby Bruce DeVault » 31 Jan 2010

In TS, an Events Log window provides an ongoing record of things that have happened, such as for instance strategies that may have been taken offline because of a division by zero, etc.

In MultiCharts, there is a message at the time when things like this happen, but there appears to be no record of it afterwards. Is there a way to have an equivalent record of past events so that looking back at a busy session, it is possible to see what happened on what chart and when?

Dear Bruce DeVault

It is not possible to have an equivalent record of past events. In MultiCharts you can only see the events of the current session. Once the session is over the event log is closed and not saved.

Anastassia,

Thank you very much for your response on this - when you say the event log is closed, could you please clarify in terms of "best practices" how you recommend to best view the events for the past session, from within the MultiCharts platform itself?

Would keeping this type of information somewhere accessible (even if it's just a text file that's appended) be feasible and do you feel like this would be a generally useful improvement?

These are the kinds of issues that become increasingly important as you get into more automation, and the sorts of things fully automated traders need - after all, while trading unattended is a high bar and can be a potentially long road to get down, just think about it - if you're not "there" having a message pop up isn't helpful at all. In that situation the goal would be to do as much as you possibly can to handle unexpected situations, and then anything that didn't get handled, you need a way to go back and do the appropriate forensic analysis to see what did happen so you can try to address it to the best of your abilities and so it doesn't happen again.

If automated trading is a direction MultiCharts is going, these types of features would be a helpful thing to have in mind in terms of future development direction - if not this exact thing, then certainly it's good to be thinking about "what would fully automated traders (or even traders striving for full automation as an incremental process) need" and how could MultiCharts best meet their needs with how you arrange things going forward.

It's worth noting as well that there are a number of logs potentially available if you right click on Programs -> MultiCharts -> Logs and choose Open File Location (or the similar option for your operating system). However, I think it would be a great idea to have something available from straight within the MultiCharts platform so users can quickly look back at what's happened in this session, and can easily understand the sequence of events. If these files are to be the ultimate answer in order to diagnose exceptional events, then the formats and locations of each kind of information would need to be documented - for most traders and non-technical users of MultiCharts, I think they would probably agree it would be much easier for them to understand and access if it were simply a matter of opening up an "event log" or something similar from within the platform, even if the information there were significantly boiled down or more limited than what is in the text file logs which may be for more technically inclined users or MultiCharts staff to analyze in the event of an issue.
