Forum problems. (Search, etc.)

Postby bowlesj3 » 30 Jul 2010

The search currently seems to have a bug because it is missing anything after 2007.

Comments:
The search seems limited (only one field with no complex search capability as we had before) (backwards move).

The new forum format is going to take some getting use to.
I just noticed there is a lot less room form typing new messages (move backwards). The preview gives me a bigger screen (better). There is more room to see messages (improvement).

I have the same problem.

Also, I changed the subject to be more generic to the new forum generally.

Another problem with the search on the new forum is the user ID of the person who created the thread is not on a single column all by itself. It makes it very hard to scan very quickly down to strip out all the other people to find a specific user who created the thread as a way of filtering. To make it even worse they are jamming too much info in and you get less threads on a screen so you have to keep flipping pages. I thought the other search display was much better generally for finding things.

Yes, the old search feature was very useful. This new one is useless. Please fix it, and if necessary go to another forum tool - there are plenty available that are really much better than this one. Also, the color scheme is horrible on the eyes. I recall some time ago another forum used a similar orange color and the users screamed back to change it. Please change the color or give the user the option to pick another one. It's starting to hurt my eyes, seriously.

I agree. The colours are hard on the eyes and yes the prior forum software was better (it had room form improvement however). For example, it was better in that I could see more posts on one page.

I share my frustration with this new forum just like others, looks like MC forum has taken two steps back.

Search facility is awful

Yes, the colours are a problem. One has problems to focus on the text. The older forum was much better in this respect.

As far as the new forum goes:
(i) there is not eneough colour distinction between topic lines;
(ii) there is not enough colour distinction between the message field and quote field (maybe the quote field should be in bold font?) and attachement field;
(ii) ''Author'' should be somehow separated from''Message''.

I knew I wasn't alone. It's clear we should move back to the previous forum until a better one is found. The more I use this one the more irritating it is. Does TSS want to discourage people from using MC as a result of this disastrous new forum? I don't think so. The previous one was primitive and a new one was required but this new one is definitely a step backwards overall.

OMG This is horrible!
For the love of God, please go back to the old forum software!

I know... be more specific.... sorry I am too emotional.
I cannot see all unread posts on one page.
I cannot open attachments (.jpg .png) in a new tab, but must open them in separate software.
I get lost too easily trying to find out where I am going on main multicharts topic page... etc.

I do not like having to scroll all the way back up to the top of the page to click on "Multicharts" to get back to the thread list.
main page link.jpg

should be at both the top AND bottom of each page. Just like in the old style forum.

Does anyone who designs this forum layout even read this thread?
Is there an webmaster to constructively complain to?

I have to admit the old forum wasn't really good, but this new one is worse. The color scheme is horrible, the search facility is a step backwards, the layout wastes too much space, email notification has stopped working for new threads, it's hard to see what new threads have arrived or been updated, etc. Seriously, either we move back to the old one or a better one is put into effect, ASAP. PLEASE!!!!

When I log in I seem to get 1/2 logged in. What this means is I set my settings to remember my log in and I can thus come back in to see my attachments to a post but I do not see the mail available or not available notice unless I go back in and do an actual log in again.

bowlesj3,

I experienced similar issue.I was in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7659 then I clicked your link: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7598 to a ''user contributed studies'' category and was logged out.

BTW, when you click on any of the two links in this post you might be logged out as well.

HI Tresor,

I tried it and you are correct. Here is the seq:
1/ I logged in and came to this thread.
2/ I could see all attaches here.
3/ I clicked on my links to the user contributed.
4/ I could see my attachments.
5/ When I come back to this thread I can not see the attachements of others (it says I do not have the required permissions).

So it seems that the loggout occurs when you leave the thread you were taken to.

What happened to the "mark all posts read" button?

It sure would be nice to have that back. -or- set up this forum like it used to be so that when I log out it automatically sets all posts to "read".

if you deleted the cookies, all posts should be shown as unread, as if you have never visited the site.

Dear RobotMan,

You say that you logged back in - this is why previously unread posts still show as unread. When you log out, all posts are automatically set to "No New Posts" until you login again.

You say that you logged back in - this is why previously unread posts still show as unread.
Let me get this straight; If I log in, I will see all the previously unread posts marked in green from all previous sessions, even if I don't want to read them and want them to go to gray no matter how many times I log out and log in.
When you log out, all posts are automatically set to "No New Posts" until you login again.
So, what you are saying, is; don't log in. Then all unread posts from all previous sessions that I don't want to read, will show up as read.

Perfect solution.
But then... I can't see which posts are new since the last time I was on the forum... Neither can I read attachments.

wait, what?

One question: Are you serious?

Hi TJ
if you deleted the cookies, all posts should be shown as unread, as if you have never visited the site.
This info is kept on the forum servers. On the old forum, I logged in from different locations and different computers and the forum would always "mark all posts as read" whenever I would log out. If this wasn't true, then I would get different unread posts depending on which computer I logged in from.

I Just realized that each post to a thread in this forum should have a divider line and it does not. The old forum had this if I remember. The problem with this line being missing is the eye can have trouble separating the posts from each other. This problem gets worse when you get two or more posts in a row from different people (or even worse the same people) which have quotes in them. These quotes create lines across the post (not right across but enough to create added confusion for the eye). I noticed it above when several quotes were included in the posts. Maybe it should have a special color such as dark blue or something. Not orange or even close.

There are so many problems with this new forum it's becoming tiresome to use. Reasons are many - lack of important features, awful colors and layout, many bugs, etc. In fact, it has now become the worst forum I have ever used and currently using. I visits many forums each day covering various areas, and this one must rate as the worst by a long way. Please get a better one; PLEASE!

It must be my browser. Sometimes I see a shading difference that highlights each new post in this forum and other times I do not see hardly any difference. When it works the shading difference is enough to make it appear there is a line separating the posts. Having said that, during the times when the forum is not showing much shading difference between posts I can see other areas of this forum where the shading difference is very noticeable. So it seems that an "Out and out line" would solve this.

1a. The page navigation within the topic is possible only from the top of the page.

1 b.The page navigation within the topic should be also possible from the bottom of the page. Picture attached.

2. I want to see more topics on the list of topics. This can be achieved by (i) reducing the font size and (ii) reducing the height of the verses.

Hi Dave,

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7706

The above item is really a charting bug. It has nothing to do with the EL code that created the trend line.

Also to me the idea of mixing user contributed studies with general EL code problems, EL bugs, EL questions, etc does not seem like a good idea. This is because, if someone wants to go looking for user contributed EL code, now they have to go through all sorts of unrelated posts.

"MC/EL Bugs,Questions,Suggestions,Misc" makes sense as a category since the novice (or even the expert) is not going to know if a problem is a charting problem or EL code problem in some situations (many situations). They do not want to spend time trying to figure out categories in such a situation (they probably won't). All they want to do is report a problem, idea, question, whatever. This type of a name will draw any sort of problem post and should be the first they see. Some MC improvement ideas may involve EL code and MC changes together (for example studies being executed using a timer which also require new reserve words). If at a later time it is considered of value in a special category maybe it could be moved there.

I figured it all out!!
I went through every topic in the entire forum and clicked on every single unread thread. So simple and yet so elegant a solution. Why do so many other forums not have ways to mark all threads as read as user unfriendly as MC forum now does? With these other inferior forums you click a button and presto, done. Not so with MC. I am forced to open every fricking thread whether I want to or not to turn off the "green topic icon" This is so refreshing! I am going to call all my trading friends on my rotary dial phone while watching my black-and-white non-remote controlled TV and let them know while waiting for the Jiffy-Pop to cook on the stove. Awesome!

Don't create long replys in this new forum. Create them in a word processor document then copy them in. This forum often breaks its link and if your response is long you could loose all your work.

change

and add

The MoveTrendLine function should be in the user contributed section.

The binary search functions should be in the user contributed section.

Could the old forum groups not be sorted by any column. User, whatever.

The MoveTrendLine function should be in the user contributed section.

Somehow this sample code of uses for the MC version of GetActive commands got moved from "user contributed" to "general discussion".

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7397&hilit=getactive

TSS is putting the MC version of GetActive back in MC 7.0 apparently (to be available along with the TS versions of these commands). So these examples should be in user contributed so users can get ideas on how to use this version of the command. On that note, I noticed it had been misplaced because I am going back to use the sample code to write a new study which will be very useful for myself and others for sure. I am going to spec it out. However I will wait until it is back where it should be.

Actually, because this EL code I am writing is so useful in so many ways (outside of my specific use and exactly as I am writing it) and has examples of how to use the EL collections for "price bar record matching processing", as well as how to do a CSV read in EL collections, I am going to just donate the code when it is done. However as the above thread mentions it will only work on MC 6.0 beta 2 until the MC version GetActive commands are back. When it is tested and proven to work properly this week some time and when the thread is moved back I will append it to that thread.

In the User Control Panel there is an option to "bookmark topics for future reference."
I can't find any button anywhere on the forum to bookmark topics.

Old forum had a button called "watch this topic for replies". There is no more.

Can forum administration look into the subject and address both issues?

Thank you,
Pavel

It would be nice if more than one attachment was allowed per post.

TJ,
Clicking on Your profile returns an error. Same error with Andrew profile. Dave's is good though :)
General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]
Table 'tss_posts' is marked as crashed and should be repaired [1194]
An SQL error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact the Board Administrator if this problem persists.
Another problem occurs when I search the forum for "compiler" keyword:
General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]
Table 'p' is marked as crashed and should be repaired [1194]
An SQL error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact the Board Administrator if this problem persists.
Just made another post into this thread describing a blank page returned when searching forum for certain keywords.
The following day that was no longer a problem, so I went to delete irrelevant post an got the same SQL error:
"Table 'p' is marked as crashed and should be repaired [1194]" The post deleted successfully though.

This thread is always showing new messages when there are not.
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8112
"Mark forums read" doesn't do anything.

Thank you TJ, :)
no, I mean post a "Thank You" at that thread...
once you posted something there, the thread will then become "read".

Posted, and it did the trick. Then got SQL error when attempted to delete. That's odd

Hi,
I have the same problem.
It is serious, as it makes the forum pretty useless.

FYI: Some of the forum topics marked as watched with an icon Image are not registered among watched topics in the User control panel -> Manage subscriptions. Example: I have only 4 topics watched in the user control panel, but much more topics have "watched" icon...

This is not "watched" icon, this icon means that you posted to this forum.
