Forex instrument definition

Postby Traderji » 07 Aug 2012

I am having issues with setting up Forex pairs in Quotemanager. What is the "big point value" field? It is does not seem to work logically.

For example: EUR/USD is quoted in 5 decimal places like x.abcDe so the price scale is 1/100000. The pip value is the value of D so "big point value" should be 10000.

But if you set it up that way in Quotemanager then when you have a open position, the Profit & Loss display in Chart Trader only shows zero for ticks or %. You can get the profit or loss displayed as $ value correctly.

Change the "big point value" in EUR/USD to 100 and now the PnL ticks work but it is multiplied by 10, so profit of 16 ticks will show as 160 ticks.

Reduce "big point value" to 10 and PnL ticks work. But does not make any sense..

*Note: for pairs that have a tick size of 0.001 or 1/1000 like USD/JPY, "big point value" seems to work differently again. I am very confused.

Traderji,

Everything works fine on our end. Please see attached screenshot. Make the symbol settings the same: PriceScale and BigPoint Value = lot size. If the problem persists, please post a screenshot of your DOM and symbol settings.

In the screenshot below, I have got instrument setup as per your screen. DOM is showing PnL in dollar value which is displaying correctly.

In the screenshot below, I have got instrument setup as per your screen. DOM is showing PnL in ticks which is showing zero ticks PnL. It should be showing -18ticks.

In this last screenshot, I have changed the Big Point value to 10 and now the DOM is correctly displaying the loss in ticks

On your screenshot the Big Point Value = 10. I don't think it is correct. If you have micro account, then the BPV should be 1000, because usually micro lot = 1000. Mini = 10 000; Standard = 100 000.

The first screenshot show Big Point Value set to 10000.

Have you restarted MultiCharts or reconnected the broker after the changes were applied in QuoteManager?

Yes after each change I restarted MC.

Note the BigPointValue of 100000 (hundred thousand).

There is something definitely messed up either in the way Multicharts is calculating PnL in ticks or in the data structure of a Instrument definition.

Do the following steps:

1) Brand new install of Multicharts .net x64
2) Set up connection to LMAX live.
3) Using Quotemanager import all forex instruments from LMAX. Use "*" in lookup field.
4) Open a chart for EUR/USD
5) Using chart trader open position with 1 contract ($10,000 lot) and observe PnL in ticks.

If the price has moved 5 pips in your direction, for example opened position at 1.2305 and now price is 1.2310, your profit is 5 ticks, correct?

Well the chart trader shows profit as 50 ticks.

I am really getting frustrated with this. This is a problem with Multicharts that needs to be fixed ASAP.

It depends I guess on what your definition of a tick is with spot forex. One might say a price move from 1.2305 to 1.2310 is 5 pips/ticks, but since LMAX quotes their forex in fractional pips (i.e. 1.23051 and 1.230109), one might also say that a price move from 1.2305 to 1.2310 is 50 fractional pips. If the definition of ticks as the 'smallest possible price increment' is used then it's correct to say there's a 50 ticks profit.

There's also a thread about that here, in which MC says here that this is a 'architectural design'.

If you don't care about fractional pips, you can change the price scale to 1/10000 and that should display the prices as 1.2305 (not 1.23050) and will also calculate the profit in the regular pips definition.

Thanks for those links Josh. Looks like I am not the first one complaining about this.
