handshaking studies

It appears studies are not multi-threaded, at least with v5 Gold. In other words they are executed one at a time. This can demonstrated by placing a 30 second delay in the first one. It blocks the rest until the first one completes. This makes handshaking between studies impossible to manage using global variables. Is there a way around this?
