Description

Dear Madams and Sirs,

Multicharts is written in C++, but actually only executble with Windows as operating system. But even with Windows Server 2012 Datacenter you are limited to a low number of sockets. If you want to use 1000 sockets you need Linux. A Linux version of Multicharts would enable the world of crays and supercomputers.
For a real professional usability there is a need of Linux, because Windows is too limited here. Windows Server supports only a limited number of multiple cpus, and it depends on the given hardware for windows. There is no such strict limitation in a Linux world. Please build a Linux executable version of Multicharts. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Andy

I strongly second this feature request.
The main argument is not so much that I want to run MultiCharts on a supercomputer, but it is rather a question of basic system stability. Well maintained Unix/Linux machines can easily run for an entire year without failure, without any glitch and any need for a reboot. They work flawlessly in larger networks.
I have never seen a Windows based system running for more than a few days without a crash or at least some other issue that makes a manual reboot necessary. Neither have I seen any Windows based system that runs any stable in a large network environment.

(on my background: worked on various Unix systems since the mid 1990s in production environment, DEC/Alpha, HP/UX, SUN/Solaris, Cray J90,T90,T3E, PC/Linux clusters etc. - compared with that havong to run MultiCharts on a Windows PC is like time travel into the stone age)

I have abandoned Windows from all my computers many years ago.  All of them have been running Linux.  Who seriously wants to use Windows with all the issues of stability, reliability, and security?  It is a shame that a mission critical auto-trading application such as MultiCharts runs on Windows.  I have to use it on a dedicated virtual machine for trading and on another for backtesting - what a hassle!
So please, build a Linux version, at least to show the world that MultiCharts is a serious trading software!

At this moment you can spend only a very few hundred thousand dollar on hardware for windows. But with a Linux version you could use supercomputers far above what is given for windows. So with Multicharts you would not have a reason anymore to hide against the big players, because you are able to use the same hardware like them. At this moment Multicharts with Windows is nice, but with Linux it would be awesome, because it would run on a computer with some 1000 cpus e.g., at this moment you need many computers to compensate that limitation. And the prices will go down, so in a few years a lot of more people could afford a kind of supercomputer, but actually cannot use it with Multicharts. It is just a matter of time, that everything gets cheap enough to buy the professional hardware. Please do not wait too long. There is no such strict limitation in a Linux world. Please build a Linux executable version of Multicharts. Thank you very much.

Considering the selected path of MS Windows and and also comparing it to the robustness, reliability, and the speed of Linux and BSD systems I have moved away from MS Windows on all our machines except two, where I am still forced to use MS Windows because of the need for Multicharts .Net. My favorites of the two alternatives mentioned above are the BSD systems FreeBSD and OpenBSD. Both has Linux emulation. On the machine I am writing from now I have FreeBSD with a desktop environment installed upon the core system. Which is actually an easy task to do. It is faster than Linux and I have never had any hangups or crashes with either apps or the system itself. Which in comparison, I have experienced with Linux a few times. As a professional working environment for charting BSD is the best and most reliable thing I can imagine. So yes, please go forward Multicharts and at least make Multicharts available for Linux.
