Even though MultiCharts is a stable and reliable piece of software, you may want to backup your custom data and studies to be on the safe side should there be a system crash or hardware failure. It is important to understand that you can back up MultiCharts files to restore them successfully later only if the backup and restore procedures were completed for exactly the same version (the build numbers in brackets that can be found in Help -> About MultiCharts should match) the software.

Saving User Data

There are two ways to backup user data: backup database files or export data from QuoteManager into .qmd files.

Copying database files is faster, but you won’t be able to merge this data with that which already exists in the database (if needed.)

Exporting data from QuoteManager into .qmd files will allow you to merge this data with other data that will exist in the database in the future; however, not everything will be exported (session templates, roots, exchanges that have not been appied any symbol in QuoteManager will not be exported).

To save database files:

  1. Click Windows Start button.
  2. Select Run
  3. For Windows Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8 paste the following command: %allusersprofile%\TS Support\MultiCharts ;
For Windows XP paste the following command: %allusersprofile%\Application Data\TS Support\MultiCharts
  4. Press Enter.
  5. In the popped up window make a copy of the DataBase folder with all its contents.

Note: MultiCharts 32 bit databases are incompatible with MultiCharts 64 bit. Copying a 32 bit database folder into MultiCharts 64 bit will cause errors. Please use the next step “Export data” to export your databases from MultiCharts 32 bit version or use the following tool to convert your 32 bit data bases into 64 bit format: How to Reduce Database Size

To export data:

  1. Open QuoteManager:
In MultiCharts main menu select File, then point to New and click QuoteManager Window
  2. In QuoteManager main menu select File, then point to Export Data and click Export All Instruments… ;or
Click the Export Data QM Export.png icon on the toolbar.
  3. In the Export window make sure that the Export symbols with settings, no data box is unchecked.
  4. Click Next
  5. Enter the name of the *.qmd file and choose the path where it will be located.
  6. Click Next
  7. Click Finish.
