I have about 40 charts with each chart having 5 min data going back to 2001. They are divided among 3 workspaces and each chart has a system assigned. Also on each chart is an indicator that writes PL data to txt files. It took with my old normal hard drive 06:40 Min to upload all charts in Multicharts. Now I changed to a SSD harddrive and somehow I expected the whole uploading process to take shorter but it took exactly the same time. Am I missing something here ?
Also I have installed 32 GB RAM and i thought I can load 200 such charts in 20 workspaces but somehow there seems to be a data limit no matter how much RAM you have. Is there anything I should know ?
Thanks

Which MultiCharts version you are using? 64 bit or 32 bit?I have about 40 charts with each chart having 5 min data going back to 2001. What CPU do you have?
Also, a lot has to do with how you set up your SSD.
Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
I used HD Clone software to clone my old harddrive into SSD Drive. I use 64 Bit Multicharts and use Intel i5 -2500 CPU @ 3.3 GHz, 32 GB Ram

Cloning is not going to cut it.I used HD Clone software to clone my old harddrive into SSD Drive.

Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
I did all optimizations of SSD drive with SSD Tweaker software -- still exactly 06:40 min. Can the people from Multicharts actually say wether in my case SSD should make a difference ?

Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
I also use a lot of textfiles. What I noticed is that if you use one chart per workspace, instead of multiple charts per workspace. The processing of the textfiles runs faster. Probably due to a better use by MC of the multicore processors.
You can give that a try, if possible.

I thought you have 40 charts? Then i would need 992 workspaces because thats the total number of charts I have

Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
14 yrs times 250 trading days times 7 hours per day times 60 minutes per hour times 6 data points per quote = 8.8 million data points
Multiply that by 40 charts... that's over 350 million data points.

Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
It does not matter how many charts you open in MC ...the question remains: Why does a SSD drive not speed up a little bit ?
Not saying your setup is at fault... and don't know what fault the MultiCharts software would play in this situation...
The strongest part of any system is its weakest link.
Sounds like a throughput bottleneck.
Are you loading the charts from ASCII data?

Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
Ascii mapping
Mapping is only for live data. What about historic data? From an ASCII file?

Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
Yes -- historic is from TXT file
Is there any reason you do not want to save the historic data into the database in MultiCharts?
For live data, You can use ASCII mapping to append the database, so you will alway have an updated database.
IIRC, txt files has to be read one record at a time.
40 charts of 14 yrs' data... that's 60 million records !!!
**scratching my head**
Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
Hi
I dont use live data in MC. WE have programmed an execution engine ourselves in c# and use CQG IC as data provider and for execution. We dont use MC for execution. We use MC for checking at end of day whether our own execution engine has done the right thing.
I get every day a new backward adjusted 5 min data series for about 40 markets. I dont want to import every single one into the Quote Manager (would be nice if it was possible to batch import into quote manager... but not possible) . So to avoid importing manually each market we use ASCII mapping ... which means that we just update the txt files in my folder every day and open the workspaces. By doing that an indicator writes important PL numbers of all systems to text files that we use later for comparison with our real trades. This all is mainly to monitor slippage and PL differences between our own real trading and theoretical system trades from MC.
Thats the setup ... the batch importing would be really the best

Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
It sounds like you have a working setup, and there is no reason to mess around with it.
You can consider a Ramdisk. Since you have 32GB of memory, you can easily put your historical data on your Ramdisk. You will see a 10x speed improvement over SSD.
Good luck.

Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
hello,
i have almost the same problem, opening (but also closing !!) 2 workspace with 4 and 10 charts, each with data2 and data3, period about 3-6 month.
cpu 3610 qm at minimum 8 gb ram ,
opening with w7 or w10 and ssd S____pro (2 or more partition inside) it is much faster then hd.
in another notebook, using S_evo, 2 partition , 1 w7 is faster then hd, while the other with w10 is not faster and much more slow that w7 of other partition.
i had the same problem last year using a farm and dedicated server with ssd, cpu 3660 32gb ram and ssd, slow like the w10 in S__evo at home
it seems to me but not sure the cause is ssd and w10), 3 minutes to open the 2 ws ,
while in w7 or w10 in ssd S___pro it need 20/30 seconds.
but not for opening, also to close ws without save anything by default it need 5 more time then w7 (eny ssd) or w10 in ssd S__pro.
someone has found the cause?
thank you

Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
Have you tried turning off indexing service in w10?
Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts
already disabled in services, checked trim, tried to use u s_magician to set the ssd, but nothing.
Re: SSD Hard Drive does not speed up opening charts [SOLVED]
i found the problem, it was my mystake. using w10 older version, i used an utility to disable windows defender and it remain off. but last pc with win10 1607 this utility put off defender but after restart pc some time it become on. i have used another way to disable defender in w10 build 1607 and ssd s__evo is faster like s_pro .
